Today we had a little birthday party for Wilder. Four local families and their kids -- 8 little Ticos ranging in age from 11 years to 7 months -- came by in the afternoon to eat pizza and cake and to swing at our homemade pinata. It was a great honor to host all of our neighbors and to have them come celebrate Wilder’s 3rd birthday with us (which is Tuesday, February 7). Though everyone spoke Spanish, the kids insisted on singing “Happy Birthday” to Wilder in English. (“Appy birtday to joo, appy birtday to joo, appy birtday to Vylder, appy birtday to joo...”). It was a great experience and Wilder had a blast playing with all of his new buddies.
During the party, a special gift was delivered for Wilder – Phoebe! We now have a dog. Her previous owner brought her out to us and after a few quick bounds around the property and a thorough sniffing of the house, she settled right in. The cats haven’t quite accepted her presence and have been staging a sit-in on top of the rompero all day and night. Calvin has come nose-to-nose with Phoebe a few times without incident, but Idgie will not deign to set foot in the same room with her. Wilder loves having a “pup,” though he’s a little unsure of what to make of her when she gets frisky and wants to play. If he would just stop running in circles around the house maybe she’d stop trying to chase him.
She's actually so well behaved and well trained that it's been an easy transition so far. In the car she just sits on our laps or lays down in the very back. She comes when we call, listens when we say no or stop, doesn't bark unless she has a reason to, doesn't chew shoes or toys, doesn’t jump or lick excessively, and doesn't chase the cats. She follows us around the house and the yard, lays at our feet while we cook or do dishes, and she’s also given us one more reason to truly call our sleeping arrangement a “family bed.” She’s pretty freakin’ cute and we’re really glad to have her. Hopefully this new pet quells Chris’ desire for the goats and chickens he’s been wanting. I really don’t think our bed is big enough . .
